Dec. 9, the Beaumont Police Department reported Special Crimes detectives obtained two warrants for 27-year-old woman in connection with child abuse of her infant son.
Quenisha Hawkins was arrested and charged with injury to a child (by act-serious body injury, first-degree felony) and injury to a child (by omission-serious body injury, first-degree felony). Bond was set at $1 million, $500,000 for each charge.
Hawkins is in custody in the Jefferson County Jail.
According to BPD, the arrest stems from a Sept. 29 incident when two BPD officers were flagged down about 5:08 p.m. in the 2900 block of South 8th St. in reference to an unresponsive infant.
Officers quickly began CPR and continued life-saving measures until Beaumont EMS arrived.
The five-month old infant was transported to a local hospital and BPD Special Crimes detectives were notified. Results of the medical assessment indicated severe life-threatening injuries and the child was life-flighted to a Galveston-area hospital.
The detectives investigation showed the infant suffered from severe abusive trauma that caused devastating injuries, ultimately leading to cardio-pulmonary arrest on Sept. 29.
The injuries were not accidental, they were inflicted on him. The mechanism of injury is highly indicative of “shaking” the child so violently as to cause multiple fractures, severe eye injury and brain injury. It was also indicated the child was abused in this manner on multiple occasions.
The infant died a month later on Oct. 30.
